He bent his forehead to hers.

She looked around the kitchen. At the lettuce in the colander. At her mother’s tea. At her son’s cookbooks. At the snow falling outside in soft white pieces, just like the snow that had fallen on Park Avenue the night she walked out of one life and into another.
“Yes,” she said.
And she meant it in a way she had never meant anything before.
“I’m all right.”
The best revenge, Isabella had learned, was not making the other person small.
People made themselves small when they chose smallness.

She turned off the water.
